Where the friction actually lives

Friction rarely announces itself. It shows up as symptoms — slipping margin, managers who can't switch off, customers who feel the cracks before you do.

I trace every symptom back to one of four places. Get all four right, and commercial performance follows. Miss one, and it drags on everything else.

Friction Diagnostic Results

You can feel it before you can name it

You know the signs, even if you’ve stopped noticing them:

  • Good customers drift away, and you’re not quite sure why.

  • The same problems keep landing back on your desk.

  • Payments drag, margins slip, and month-end always seems to surprise you.

  • Your best people are firefighting instead of moving things forward.

  • Two people do the same job in two completely different ways.

  • You can’t take a week off without the wheels starting to wobble.

None of the above is the problem. They’re symptoms — and the cause is usually somewhere you’re not looking.

It’s rarely one big thing

When something’s wrong, the instinct is to fix it where it hurts. Late payments? Chase harder. Complaints? Add a process.

But friction rarely sits where its cause does. Late payments can start in the way you win work. Complaints can start with what was promised to close the sale. Patch the symptom, and it comes back; find the source, and it goes for good.

That’s the work — not silencing the loudest problem, but tracing it to where it actually begins.

Four questions that decide how well a business runs

Whatever the symptom, the cause almost always comes back to four things. I look at every part of your business — how you win work, deliver it, look after customers, manage the money and run the team — through the same four lenses:

Right People

Are the right people in place, clear on what they're doing and why — and do they believe they can do it?

This is about accountability sitting close to the work, not escalating upward by default.

Right Things

Is there a clear line of sight between what someone does day to day and the commercial result it produces?

This is business, not busyness — activity that feels productive but doesn't move the numbers, versus effort that's pointed at what actually matters.

Right Way

Do your processes deliver the outcome reliably, or does it depend on who happens to be doing the job that day?

This is where the systems, tools and workflows sit — the how of getting things done consistently.

Right Time

Are the rhythms in place to catch things early, or do you only find out once something's already gone wrong?

Feedback, decisions and reviews on a cadence, not just when a crisis forces the issue.

How we work

Find, Focus, Fix isn't a slogan — it's the order things have to happen in, or the fix doesn't hold.

Find the Friction comes first because most owners can feel something's wrong before they can name it, and guessing at a fix before you've found the real source just adds another layer of friction. So I start with an honest, evidence-based look across all four areas — not a survey score, but time spent watching how the business actually runs.

Focus the Team comes next, because friction is everywhere once you start looking for it, and trying to fix all of it at once is how these programmes usually die. The skill isn't finding problems — it's agreeing, together, on the handful that will actually move the numbers, and having the discipline to leave the rest alone for now.

Fix What Matters is where it becomes real: building the habits, standards and accountability that close the gap, and — just as importantly — making sure friction doesn't quietly creep back in the moment attention moves elsewhere. Not perfect. Better, and built to hold.

Find the Friction

A clear-eyed look at where the drag really is, not where it shows up, but where it starts.

Focus the Team

Friction is everywhere if you go looking for it. The skill is knowing the handful of fixes that make the most difference, and leaving the rest alone.

Why Us

Ricky spent years on the other side of this. As a salesperson, he hated the process — he thought it controlled him.

As a leader, he learned the opposite is true: the right process is what frees good people to do their best work, and it’s the only fair way to tell whether it’s the person who’s stuck or the system around them.

Ricky is not a guru, and he doesn’t trade in jargon. He’s run operational teams, led large-scale projects, carried the numbers, and quietly fixed what was costing the business.

He’s also started and run a consulting business before exiting after ten years to pursue Clear the Friction, bringing his wealth of corporate experience inside and outside to the benefit of established SMEs.

That’s the help he brings: practical, direct, and aimed squarely at what actually moves the needle.

Results are anonymised before-and-after case studies — to protect our clients from sharing commercially sensitive information.
